Summer Danger: Processed MeatsBy Nonna Joann • Jun 5th, 2012 • Category: Nonna's Nutrition News & Views
Don’t Read This (If your idea of summer fun is to roast hot dogs.)
The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) has just completed a detailed review of more than 7,000 clinical studies covering links between diet and cancer. That’s huge!
Its conclusion is no surprise to those who understand that chemicals in food are unhealthy. Although, if you still believe that the FDA is looking out for you, you’ll be shocked.
Processed Meats Dangerous
Processed meats are too dangerous for human consumption! What? You may not even hear about this in the news and if you do, it’ll be forgotten in a few days.
Consumers should stop buying and eating all processed meat products. NEVER consume processed meats; that is if you don’t want cancer. Processed meats include bacon, sausage, hot dogs, sandwich meat, packaged ham, pepperoni, salami and virtually all red meat used in frozen prepared meals. These meats are usually manufactured with a carcinogenic ingredient: sodium nitrite.
Sodium Nitrate & Cancer
Sodium nitrate is used as a preservative and to turn packaged normally brown meats a red color so they look fresh. Unfortunately, sodium nitrite also results in the formation of cancer-causing nitrosamines in the human body. This leads to a sharp increase in cancer risk for those who eat them. When you realize that children are not miniature adults and the chemicals in our food impacts their still-developing bodies more, you’ll never barbeque hot dogs again.
This isn’t new information. A 2005 University of Hawaii study found processed meats increase the risk of pancreatic cancer by 67 percent. Another study revealed that every 50 grams of processed meat consumed daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer by 50 percent. These are alarming numbers. Note that these cancer risks do not come from eating fresh, non-processed meats. They only appear in people who regularly consume processed meat products containing sodium nitrite.
FDA and the USDA continue to give their approval to additives known to cause cancer and other illnesses. It’s up to you to educate yourself and then to eliminate chemicals from your diet, especially Sodium Nitrate.
What Processed Meats Contain Nitates?

Canned soups with meat
Frozen pizza with meat
Frozen meals with meat
Ravioli and meat pasta foods
