The following 1997 headlines can’t be verified, nonetheless, they’re very funny!

1) Include your children when baking cookies.

2) Teachers strike idles kids.

3) New study of obesity looks for larger group.

4) Chef throws his heart into helping feed the needy.

5. Kids make nutritious snacks.

Freshness Gag Test
Eggs: When something starts pecking its way out of the shell, the egg is probably past its prime.

Meat: If opening the refrigerator door causes stray animals from a three-block radius to congregate outside your house, the meat is spoiled.

Nicole thinks these are very funny!

Canned Goods: Any canned goods that have become the size or shape of a basketball should be disposed of… Carefully.

Wine: It should not taste like salad dressing.

Potatoes: Fresh potatoes don’t have roots, branches, or dense, leafy undergrowth.

General Rule of Thumb: Most food can’t be kept longer than the average life span of a hamster. Keep a hamster in your refrigerator to gauge this.

Ben’s Riddle:
One evening we received a phone call from our seven-year-old grandson, Ben. A little voice asked to speak to Granddad. Our grandson, Ben, had a new riddle and he wanted to see if he could stump Granddad. “What does cheese say, when it’s getting its picture taken?” People

The Top 10 Signs You’re a Lousy Cook:

10. Your family automatically heads for the table every time they hear a fire siren.
9. Your kids know what “peas porridge in a pot nine days old” tastes like.
8. When your toddler goes outside to make mud pies, the rest of the family grabs forks and follows him.
7. Your husband’s favorite drink is Alka-Seltzer.
6. You have to buy 25 pounds of dog food twice a week for your toy poodle.
5. Your kids got even with the neighborhood bully by inviting him over for dinner.
4. Your kids were suspended from school for smuggling toxic waste in their lunch bags.
3. You refer to the smoke detector as the dinner bell.
2. No matter what you do to it, the gravy’s lumpy and purple.
… and the Number 1 Sign You’re a Lousy Cook:
1. You burned the house down making toast.

Top 10 Signs You’re Eating Genetically Modified Food:

10. Your green beans are attempting a split flanking maneuver on your clearly surprised mashed potatoes.
9. Whenever Gallagher appears on TV, your watermelon leaps up, grabs the remote, and shuts off the TV.
5. An apple a day… cures leukemia.
4. Family of seven, one turkey – yet everyone gets a drumstick.
3. Your Ginsu knives are suddenly afraid of the tomatoes. Okay, this doesn’t seem so far-fetched with the recent recall for tomatoes.
2. Choco-chini: Looks like zucshini, tastes like a Ding-Dong.
… and the #1 Sign You’re Eating Genetically Modified Food: A SWAT team is ordering your burrito to drop – YOU!

(Genetically Modified Foods, known as GMOs are present in our foods supply. You’re probably eating them without even knowing it.)

I try not to make resolutions that I know I can’t keep. In fact, there have been years, where I didn’t make any resolutions at all.

This coming year, I already know I want to spend more time in God’s Word. When I read scripture, it gives balance and perspective to all that I do. Don’t know why I procrastinate opening up the Bible, but I do. This year, no matter what, I want to make reading scripture a regular part of my day.

Okay, I’ll go one more and make a second resolution. This one is really for you. There are moments when I want to stop writing the Baby Bites blog. Yes, it’s true. I’ve posted twice a week for over two years.

Who knew sugar does so much harm?

Sometimes the blogs come together in a few minutes, mostly they do not. I love to research nutrition and health, so I usually have something to write about. When I don’t, then I get creative. My resolution is to find new ways to help you in your family’s health journey. Every week, I’ll do my best to give you the latest vital health information. If you have any topics or questions you’d like to know more about, let me know.

My last blog,
A New Year’s Resolution for Your Family’s Health, brought up a common problem parents face. Even when you do your best to feed your family healthy foods, well-meaning friends and family keep giving your kids sugar. Especially for those who want to cut out or cut back on the sugar your family ingests, I’ll begin my resolution by offering reasons which will help you to explain to others why sugar is harmful:

Your Children Are Watching You

The most important factor in raising a healthy eater is what you eat. Yes, if you want your children to eat whole foods, you must eat them yourself.

Moms often ask, “How do I get my husband on-board with healthy eating?” This seems to be a universal problem; even the First Lady can relate.

I am very pleased that Michelle Obama has brought healthy eating to the forefront with her campaign to end childhood obesity. The only issue I have with the campaign is that it doesn’t go far enough. There are plenty of children and adults where weight isn’t an issue, but they’re eating junk foods just the same. Picky eaters universally love junk foods.

Michelle recently spoke to the National Restaurant Association. She encouraged them to take unhealthy items off their menus and replace them with healthier options. While this sounds good in theory, the problem isn’t with the restaurants. We live in a free-market society. Menus will change, when people stop ordering unhealthy items. Restaurants need to make a profit. You can be sure, if an item stops selling, it’ll disappear from the menu. It’s not the restaurants fault we order junk foods…it’s ours.

President Obama enjoying a frozen ice
flavors derived from petroleum)

A L.A. Times columnist wrote a piece about the First Lady’s campaign for healthy eating and President Obama’s penchant for junk foods. He took a lighthearted look at the President and the food he regularly eats. The piece was accompanied by 13 photos of the President chowing down unhealthy junk foods like chicken wings, pancakes, cheese-steak, hot dogs, waffles, fried chicken, shaved ice, pizza, fries and cheeseburgers.
(To see the photos Click Here.)

I must admit the opinion piece made me giggle, because I didn’t realize that others were noticing the same thing…the President ignores his wife’s recommendations for healthy eating. But, it’s no laughing matter. Malia and Sasha are watching him (from the opinion piece, apparently so are others). What he does is even more important than what he says or what the First Lady’s recommendations may be for the rest of us.

Unfortunately, for Michelle and moms whose husbands are junk food addicts, there isn’t an easy answer. Many times husbands think that they have eaten (fill in the blank) all their lives and they’re okay. The truth is often that they are not okay, but living in denial.

Daddies (and sometimes mommies) have a tendency to overlook their health issues or think of them as minor. For many young parents, time is on their side. They are still young enough that their junk food habits have not yet caught up with them. For some, they just don’t care, believing the doctor will have a prescription to fix whatever health issue may come down the road. For others, they don’t make the connection with their health issues and the food they eat.

There is no magic pill. Eating junk foods is feeding an unhealthy habit. Unhealthy habits or addictions can be junk food or a smoking habit, drinking, sugar addiction, or drug habit. The first step is to realize you have a habit and it’s unhealthy. The second is to want to change. You cannot make your spouse change, but you can make it easy for him/her to change by refusing to purchase junk foods yourself and having healthy options in your home. (There’s not much hope for Michelle, her husband eats out all the time. I don’t think she cooks much either.)

To raise a healthy eater, you must be one…your children are watching what you eat.

The Forest Feast Encourages Healthy Eating

Lifestyles and behaviors are established in early childhood. This is especially true for eating habits and food preferences. Unfortunately, many foods that children consume are lacking in essential nutrients.

Our national taste buds have become accustomed to junk foods, loaded with added sugars, artificial ingredients, and synthetic flavors. This has made it much more difficult for kids to enjoy the unique tastes and textures of whole foods, especially veggies. Parents, caregivers, and teachers can promote healthy nutrition in children by limiting processed foods. But that alone isn’t enough. Children need to be taught how to appreciate nutritious foods.

The children’s storybook, The Forest Feast: Baby Bites® Mealtime Adventures, is designed to help develop healthy eating habits. The Forest Feast integrates fun with whole foods. Best friends, Betty Baby Bites®, a tiny Italian mouse, and Try Rannosaurus®, a gigantic T-Rex, eat their way through a prehistoric forest.

Try, a growing dinosaur, has only one thing on his mind—FOOD. In fact, he’s eager to try any new food (that’s why he’s named Try), but his favorite is the green variety (after all he’s green). Try’s searching for a special veggie to bring to the weekly feast. At day’s end, everyone is surprised by his contribution.

Betty Baby Bites® is Try’s best buddy and she’s the brains behind the dinosaur. She’s a foodie, loving the culinary arts. Betty can often be found supervising meals and interjecting her favorite Italian words of support, fantastico (wonderful) and bravo (well done).

The Forest Feast is divided into three whimsical adventures. Each escapade ends with the recipe Try and Betty devour. When a child helps to prepare the same meal that Try and Betty eat, they begin to appreciate Try’s conviction, “Green food is yummy!”

“Green food is yummy!”
Aidan likes to pretend he’s Try Rannosaurus.

The Forest Feast stands alone as a charming tale for children. Although, it’s intended as a companion for the parenting book, Baby Bites®: Transforming a Picky Eater into a Healthy Eater. The reading and visual input aspects of multi-sensory learning are engaged when The Forest Feast is read to children. Betty Baby Bites® and Try Rannosaurus’® antics are sure to win over even the most vegetable-resistant child.

Step One: Start Early
You can avoid having a picky eater! The earlier you start introducing whole foods the easier it will be. When your baby is ready for solid foods, begin with real foods. Introduce squash, carrots, broccoli, avocado, peas, green beans before sweeter fruit like bananas. Never feed your baby processed foods, especially with added sugars. I know it’s funny to see a baby eat their first ice cream or a cupcake, but why? Babies are just as happy to eat whole foods.
Click Here for “Affordable Healthy Baby Food.”

Toddler snacks should be from whole foods, not from a package. Toddlers eat what you offer them. Avoid chemical and sugar loaded junk foods, even occasionally. Toddlers experience with food is what you make it. They don’t know to ask for junk foods. Pack healthy snacks for the pool, park and zoo, avoiding the temptation to purchase highly sugared and artificially colored Popsicles and candies.

Jovey thinks watermelon is as sweet
as any sugared Popsicle.

Step Two: Ground Zero
The battle over whole foods is won or lost in the grocery store. If junk foods are not in your home, whole foods will be eaten. What do you normally purchase? Is your pantry loaded with processed cookies, crackers, chips and soda? Then that is what your children will eat. Keep healthy foods where your children can easily reach them. Clean and cut veggies into julienne slices: carrots, bell peppers and celery. Place them on a lower shelf in your refrigerator, where your kids can reach them. Keep washed fruit in a bowl on the table.

Step Three: Actually Cook
And I don’t mean heating something in the microwave or opening a box of mac and cheese. Busy moms can still make healthy meals. Having the right equipment is essential for cooking on the go. If you don’t already have a crockpot and a pressure cooker, buy them. You can use the money you save by not eating out and purchasing expensive processed foods at the supermarket. Make double family portions and freeze one for another meal.

Of course, you have to persuade your kids to eat them. Fast foods, highly sugared foods, snacks loaded with altered fats only make your job harder.

Engineered foods are leaving dietary gaps replacing whole foods. Ironically, experts say, our kids are actually missing out on more nutrients than did then children of the previous century. This generation is not expected to live as long as the last. We would improve our children’s health and longevity if we would feed them whole foods.

Tino can ‘B’ helping & funny.

According to a report by the National Cancer Institute, only 1 percent of children between ages 2 and 19 meet all the USDA Food Guide Pyramid recommendations for grains, vegetables, fruit, meats, and dairy. What’s shocking, 16 percent meet NONE of the recommendations.

Your Child Can ‘B’ a Healthy Eater
B-1: Be aware that in most ways our food supply has been defiled. It’s full of processed foods, which taste great, but have little nutritional value. In addition, many times processed foods contain harmful ingredients. Learn to read labels and discern what they say. A good rule of thumb is if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it’s not a real food.

B-2: Be vigilant in limiting these poor dietary choices. You accomplish this by purchasing whole foods and limiting processed foods in your kitchen. Your child can’t eat it if you don’t buy it.

B-3: Be a teacher and a role model. Teach your child the value of whole foods. You teach by example and by incorporating multi-sensory learning into your child’s experience. Picky eaters are disarmed when you no longer bribe or make vain threats at the table. Teaching a child to enjoy whole foods requires using all the senses, not just taste. Involve your child in the kitchen and always reinforce how wonderful the food tastes.

It all starts with baby’s first solid food. Many moms purchase their baby’s first solid foods ready-made. The baby food jars are certainly cute, but this is usually NOT a healthy choice and definitely NOT the most economical.

Many baby foods have added sugars and thickeners, such as modified food starches, and flours. Organic baby foods will be your best source for nutrition in the store bought variety. Of course, no pesticides are used in the growing process of organic foods, although the cost will be higher.

Grace finds it hard to believe that baby food is sooo easy to make.
http://www.mbgpics.com/

In a
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI ) report about baby food they say, “Baby foods are very high priced compared to similar regular foods… parents often pay more than double for baby food fruit juices and applesauce…Makers of baby food encourage a mystique about their products. They want parents to think that commercial baby foods have special properties that make them particularly appropriate, if not essential, for infants.”

CSPI recommends making your own baby food and always avoid baby food desserts. I agree! What makes baby food applesauce any different from applesauce for big people? NOTHING…both should be sugar-free! I’d like to know who came up with the idea of baby dessert, anyway. Since when do we need to teach our children to eat sweets? Babies shouldn’t eat any sugar, at least during the first year, after that only sparingly, if at all.

Most babies are ready to begin solid food at about 6 months. Making your baby’s food gives you total control over what goes into your baby’s tiny tummy. You’ll know it’s free of additives and you’ll have the option of preparing organic foods for your baby. If your family is prone to food allergies, homemade baby food will ensure your baby will not ingest hidden allergenic ingredients!

It’s not difficult to make your own baby food
Before you begin, you should make sure you have clean hands and clean utensils. Homemade baby food will store for three days in your refrigerator or you can freeze it in baby-size portions in an ice cube tray. Once the food is frozen, remove the individual portions and defrost when needed in the refrigerator. After feeding your baby, throw out any uneaten portion, because bacteria will quickly grow.

The first grains to introduce should be oatmeal, barley, and brown rice. You can make your own baby cereal by grinding up the grains in a food blender (or even a clean coffee grinder). To make a powder of the grain, place a cup or two of brown rice, barley, or oatmeal in your blender. Turn on to high and process until it’s the consistency of a powder. Store your powdered grains in an air tight container, in a cool dry place. When you’re ready to make the cereal, Put ¾ of a cup of water into a saucepan. Once the water is boiling, add one ½ cup of the grain powder. Use a whisk to mix it together. Simmer for about 10 minutes and continue to whisk the entire time. Add liquid (breast milk or formula) to the desired thickness. Baby cereal stores nicely in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Of course you can also freeze cereal in an ice cube tray. Once frozen, place the cubes into a plastic bag and store them for up to 3 months.

When your baby is ready to add more food items, it’s a good idea to know which foods to avoid. Foods to stay away from the first year of baby’s life are chocolate, citrus fruit, egg, fish, honey, milk, peanut, shellfish, soy, sugar, tree nut (walnut, cashew, etc.), and wheat.

Introduce new foods at the rate of one per week, so you can pinpoint any allergies or sensitivities. Make sure your child has accepted grains, vegetables, and fruits before adding any meats. Steam vegetables to retain as much vitamins and minerals as possible, as opposed to boiling.

First foods to consider after brown rice, barley, and oats are applesauce, apricots, avocados, bananas, beets, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green beans, mangoes, peas, peaches, pears, pumpkins, squash, and yams. Add meats (turkey, chicken, lamb, and beef) after your baby is used to eating grains, veggies, and fruits.

I think it’s best to wait until a baby is able to pick up small pieces of food him/herself, before introducing most food. Just make sure the food is soft and coarsely mashed or chopped into very tiny pieces. Another easy method is to grate food items for a toddler: carrots, apples, pears, etc. Know that a baby may eat only a tablespoon or so of food at a time. Don’t force your baby to eat any food.

If you want to puree the food, then steam it and puree it in a blender or mash it with a potato masher or fork. Add liquid as you are pureeing or blending to the desired consistency. The secret to how much food you put in the kitchen appliance you use to puree is that the container basket should never be more than half-full. No appliance will do a good job if it’s overstuffed! Fill the container less than half way and add a scant amount of liquid to begin.

It’s not usually until the second year, that babies tend to become picky. If your baby (and then toddler) eats only whole foods, picky eating won’t EVER become a problem.

You Can Still Eat Healthy

Writing is a solitary business, but one that pretty much suits me. After my book, “Baby Bites: Transforming a Picky Eater into a Healthy Eater,” came out, I found myself writing a talk. That was the easy part. Speaking to groups was more of a challenge. Just about the time I was getting comfortable with that, I realized that I needed to address another issue.

Talking correctly: You’d think I’d know how to talk. After all I’ve been doing it for decades. Often after speaking for 45 minutes, my voice would become horse. Once, I began podcasting
this became more problematic, as I usually record several episodes at a time. It was recommended that I see a voice coach.

How I ended up at The Academy of the Arts with Dr. Martin, who has a Ph.D. from Juilliard, is really a God-thing. Dr. Martin coaches well-known singers and Olympic athletes on their breathing techniques. . . and now a podcasting nonna.

That’s what I need to learn, proper breathing. I’ve just begun voice training. I knew it would be difficult, but I didn’t know it would be like patting my head, while rubbing my stomach, chewing gum, and whistling . . . all at the same time. Did I mention that I never learned how to whistle? Do you think that has something to do with the way I breathe?

Dr. Martin has an incredible schedule. It’s not unusual for him to work 12 or 14 hours a day. He eats out most times, not having time to cook or the desire to do so. After my last session, I asked him what he regularly eats. He confessed that because of time, he usually stops to eat at fast food restaurants. We talked for a few minutes about how our bodies were designed for whole foods. Fast food is loaded with unhealthy ingredients like altered fats, MSG, and of course sugar. All three taste good, but are detrimental to health.

Dr. Martin tried eating diet microwave dinners for a while, but he said they just didn’t taste good and weren’t satisfying. After eating a microwave dinner, he’d end up going out for a hamburger. I promised him that I’d come up with a plan on how he might incorporate whole foods into his routine. This is challenging, because he doesn’t cook at all and when eating out even at nice restaurants, chemicals and additives are commonly in the food.

People who eat out a lot have difficulty losing weight. Think about it. Most restaurant food is loaded with things like High Fructose Corn Syrup. Not only is it high in calories, High Fructose Corn Syrup blocks leptin, which job it is to tell your brain that you’re full. Leptin regulates your appetite and increases your metabolism. When leptin is blocked, your brain is tells you you’re still hungry, so you eat more. It’s a vicious circle.

The other common ingredient in restaurant food is MSG, a flavor enhancer, which is really a tasty poison, killing brain cells, and altered fats, which aren’t metabolized in the body. The result of these factors is that your body isn’t getting the nutrients it needs. Your body is starving for nutrients, even if you’re overweight, so you get the message to eat more. This is a typical pattern and the only way to break it is to eat out less and to eat whole foods.

Now, the dilemma for Dr. Martin and many others: how to eat whole foods when you don’t cook, because you’re working all the time. On the way home, I came up with a plan to get the most bang out of food without cooking. It was obvious.

Why didn’t I think of it right away? If you don’t cook, then eat raw food. Obviously, raw food isn’t cooked. Of course, there’ll be a period of detoxing and resetting your taste thermostat. Food will taste flat for a little while. Be patient, this phase will pass. In the morning make a fruit smoothie with organic whole milk. Not only does your body need fat, but you’ve been giving it lots of altered fats. So, don’t skimp on whole milk, it not only tastes better, your body will digest this natural fat. Add fruit like a banana and a handful of berries. Blueberries have the highest level of antioxidants, so you might want to start with these. To supercharge your morning, add one tablespoon of flax seed oil, purchased in the refrigerator section of a whole foods store. And one teaspoon of barely green.

For easy lunches eat raw foods: Juliann slices of veggies: carrots, celery, zucchini, green peppers, etc. If you eat a salad out, don’t use prepared salad dressings. These are loaded with altered fats, salt, and sugars. Ask that the vinegar and oil be brought to your table. Peanut butter and jelly, makes a nutritious sandwich. Use whole grain bread and jelly with no added sugars. Purchase tuna, packed in water, in small individual cans. Eat tuna the Italian way: toss with red wine vinegar and olive oil. Enjoy whole cheeses and nuts and seeds. Finish your lunch with either an apple, orange, pear, or some other piece of fruit.

Dinner is more of a challenge for those who don’t cook at all. I recommend going cold turkey from fast food. Find a reasonably priced restaurant or two that you can order grilled, boiled, or roasted food. Never order fried food. Do your very best to eat before seven, then don’t eat again until breakfast. Getting whole grains is difficult when you eat out. Even if the bread is brown, it’s probably not a whole grain. Never allow the waitperson to set a bread basket on your table. Most likely an altered fat is an ingredient in the bread. Crackers usually have altered fats, so pass on those, too. Purchase whole grain bread from the grocers and enjoy bread with breakfast or lunch.

Drink tea or coffee without any cream or sugar. The cream you get out might not be dairy, but an altered fat. Drink lots of water and never any pop, diet or otherwise. You’ll find whole foods will satisfy you. You won’t feel the need for dessert.

If you get the munchies between meals, eat more raw food. If I can learn to pat my head, rub my stomach, chew gum, and whistle at the same time, you can incorporate healthy eating, even if you’re too busy to cook.

Note: “What’s Cooking with Nonna?” podcasts are no longer available.

Animal studies have found that blueberries may reverse age-related memory loss and other studies have found that blueberries contain many health-promoting antioxidants. Blueberries are associated with numerous health benefits including protection against urinary-tract infections, cancer, age-related health conditions, like heart disease and brain damage from strokes.

In a previous study on lab rats, old rats fed a diet rich in blueberries grew neurons, which means the blueberries may play a role in reversing age-related short-term memory loss. There were also improvements in coordination and balance.

Despite this yummy news, current per capita consumption is only 4 cups a year, this is only 1/6 of the strawberries we eat.

Blueberries are good news for those of us who want to stay healthy and promote brain function!
